Assessing Smallholder-Inclusive Business Models to Support Sustainable Food System Transformation in Indonesia

My research examines how smallholder-inclusive business models can support the transformation of Indonesia’s organic rice sector. Despite more than two decades of organic agriculture development and its recognised economic and environmental potential, organic rice remains marginal within Indonesia’s rice sector. This study explores how business models shape the creation, distribution, and capture of value among smallholder farmers and other value chain actors, with particular attention to farmer inclusion and women’s participation. Using a combination of systematic review, value network analysis, gender-inclusive market analysis, and participatory business model design, the research aims to identify pathways towards more equitable, viable, and sustainable organic rice value chains in Indonesia.
